TL;DR: Rivian is recalling 98,828 vehicles across its R1T, R1S and R2 lines because a notification can obstruct the rearview-camera image when the vehicle is in reverse. Rivian has released a free over-the-air software remedy.

What happened

NHTSA campaign 26V597000, which Rivian identifies as FSAM-1866, covers certain 2022–2027 R1S SUVs, 2022–2026 R1T pickups and 2027 R2 SUVs. The named model years describe the recall population; they do not mean every vehicle from those years is included.

Rivian reported that, in a rare sequence involving stability control being turned off and the driver returning to the vehicle, a safety notification can overlap the center-screen camera view after reverse is selected. NHTSA says an obstructed rearview image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle and increase crash risk. The condition does not comply with federal rear-visibility requirements.

Why it matters

The defect affects the information a driver receives while backing up. Rivian's remedy is a software update delivered over the air at no charge, so most owners should not need a service-center visit solely to install the fix.

What owners should do

Install the latest software update offered by the vehicle and follow Rivian's recall instructions. NHTSA says owner letters are expected by November 9, 2026, and that affected VINs are expected to become searchable through its recall lookup by that date. Owners can also contact Rivian Service Support to confirm whether a specific vehicle is included.

Check the official NHTSA recall record or use NHTSA's VIN lookup once the campaign population is available there.

Diagnostic warning light on?

This recall concerns a camera-display software condition and is not diagnosed through a check-engine code. If your vehicle separately stores a standard OBD-II P-code, use the UTH Code Lookup for a plain-language explanation.
